Vermont man wants tortoise returned

The alleged theft of a two-foot long, 100-plus-pound African spur-thighed tortoise has left its owner distraught.

“I’m doing as well as can be expected for a guy who doesn’t have a tortoise,” Peter Lowry of Albany said Thursday. “I’m fearful that he will be left to devices that he can’t deal with.”

The missing reptile, a native of the southern Sahara, lived in a heated enclosure on Lowry’s property and can survive only in warm temperatures. Lowry, a 66- year-old exotic-animal breeder who used to work at the Bronx Zoo, traded a pair of cockatoos for the tortoise in 1991.
