Turtle video investigation begins

Queensland’s wildlife authorities will investigate a YouTube video of a turtle being dismembered while still alive.

The video, uploaded to YouTube last October, shows four people, out of a group of 10, dragging the turtle ashore and then cutting off its flippers.

The RSPCA and animal activists have condemned the graphic footage and called for a review into traditional hunting practices.

But there are concerns the video is an example of a wider problem of turtles and dugongs being slaughtered inhumanely and illegally in far north Queensland for the black market.
