Harsher penalties for animal smugglers soon

Interfere with New Zealand endangered wildlife at your peril – that was the message to would-be smugglers at the launch of a skink breeding programme at Christchurch’s Peacock Springs Wildlife Park.

The message comes after recent reports of New Zealand geckos being smuggled out of the country and Norwegian hunters shooting protected wood pigeon.

Now harsher penalties are being sought to deter tourists threatening the country’s protected species.
