Diamondbacks thrive despite cold winter, which is Fangtastic

A blizzard, an ice storm and cold temperatures that bordered on historic made the winter of 2009-10 an uncomfortable experience for humans in southern Oklahoma.

However, if the rattlesnakes the Waurika Volunteer Fire Department has been buying are a barometer, the frigid winter didn’t have the same effect on serpents who occupy the territory.

In anticipation of the Fangtastic Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt, the firefighters purchase rattlesnakes that are brought in by individuals from around the area. The snake meat stocks the concession stand the department runs and is also purchased in raw form by visitors who trek to Waurika for the three-day festival, which begins its 49th run on Friday, April 9.
