Crocodile man’s tears over having to kill snake

The Central Coast’s own “crocodile man”, Derek Ingham, was almost reduced to tears on Tuesday – because he had to kill a snake.

Mr Ingham, who with his wife Karen operates the Croc Stars display show, is also a volunteer with Wildlife Arc.

He was called to an incident at Morisset on Monday to recover a snake found in a car.

The snake was an illegal American corn snake, non-venomous and considered ideal pets for children in their home country.

But in Australia they are lethal, carrying a virus that can kill native snakes and lizards.

Despite exhausting every avenue, Mr Ingham had no alternative but to have the snake killed.

“I will have a tear in my eye,” he said. “They are beautiful snakes and very affectionate.

“But I want people to know this is what happens when you bring illegal snakes into Australia.
