Turtles need cow defence

Our bum-breathing turtle hatchlings will be protected by electric fences in an effort to stop their latest predator — the humble cow.

The white-throated snapping turtle is about to pace its way onto the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s (DERM) endangered species list – but not without a fight from conservationists around the region.

In the first project of its kind, DERM has teamed up with the Burnett Catchment Care Association and Impact to build electric fences around two nesting areas along the Burnett River.
