Gill net lawsuit filed by turtle hospital

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center filed suit in U.S. District Court Tuesday in its quest to halt gill net fishing in North Carolina.

Contending that N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries and the N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission are in violation of the Endangered Species Act, the lawsuit cites studies that indicate gill net fishing in North Carolina waters result in injury and death of sea turtles protected by the ESA, according to an article in Duke University’s Law News & Events.
