Turtle Lady sticks neck out for slow movers

The economic downturn means Christchurch turtle fans are no longer able to shell out on the pets.

So in the past year Donna Moot, the city’s “Turtle Lady”, has ended up taking care of them.

About five years ago she started taking sick, lost or injured turtles in, and in her Somerfield house there are now 41 of them.

“I’ve had more in the past 12 months than I’ve ever had. People are finding it more expensive to look after them,” she said.

Separate fenced ponds in her back garden house males and females, while another large female is swimming in a temporary “holiday home”.

There are four tanks indoors for smaller turtles.

Moot recognises all the turtles, and their names are often related to where they were found.
