Local Navy assists with sea turtle rescue

A U.S. Coast Guard C-130 Hercules aircraft landed at Naval Air Station North Island Jan. 28, carrying two sick sea turtles from Newport, Ore.

NASNI was an intermediate spot on the trip which ultimately led to the transfer of the turtle to Sea World San Diego for rehabilitation.  This coordinated effort between the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard was due in part to inadequate CG landing facilities in San Diego.

“It worked out really well,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Allyson E. T. Conroy, the 11th District public affairs detachment supervisor. “Now we’ve had three departments – the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Interior – to all help these animals.”
