Smuggled tortoise found taped up at Stansted Airport

A couple who smuggled seven tortoises into Stansted Airport – taping up the head and leg holes of the largest – have been banned from keeping reptiles for 10 years.Avid reptile collector Michael Gates and his partner Carol Wormley, both 42, had kept the endangered Hermann tortoises in their Corfu hotel room, Harlow magistrates were told.

Prosecutor Angela Hughes said the couple holidayed on the Greek island last July. They took the tortoises from their natural habitat before packing them inside socks and linen bags in their luggage, where they remained for the hour-long coach transfer from their hotel and the two-hour 45-minute flight to Stansted.
